Dentine hypersensitivity (DHS) is a common oral health problem. DHS is not a disease in itself, but rather a symptom of an underlying condition.

This compendium provides an overview of DHS for dental professionals starting with an internationally accepted definition of DHS, moving on to discuss its prevalence in the population and its relevance to both patients and dental professionals and then its etiology. The compendium continues by examining strategies for prevention, management and treatment of DHS by focusing on the most common underlying conditions responsible for dentine hypersensitivity.

Thanks to prophylaxis and effective preventive dental treatments, patients are keeping their teeth for much longer than in the past. This means that tooth wear can become a major problem for many patients. It is therefore important that the profession is prepared to identify early signs of tooth wear and its causes so that patients can be advised about how to limit the extent of the problem.
